The Sunday Salon!

What is the Sunday Salon? Imagine some university library's vast reading room. It's filled with people--students and faculty and strangers who've wandered in. They're seated at great oaken desks, books piled all around them, and they're all feverishly reading and jotting notes in their leather-bound journals as they go. Later they'll mill around the open dictionaries and compare their thoughts on the afternoon's literary intake....

That's what happens at the Sunday Salon, except it's all virtual. Every Sunday the bloggers participating in that week's Salon get together--at their separate desks, in their own particular time zones--and read. And blog about their reading. And comment on one an other's blogs. Think of it as an informal, weekly, mini read-a-thon, an excuse to put aside one's earthly responsibilities and fall into a good book.

I'm new to the Sunday Salon, in fact this is my first Sunday Salon post! I think it's a great idea. I finished Off Season by Anne Rivers Siddons the beginning of this week. I liked it but it wasn't my favorite of hers. I still think about Colony. I loved that book! I read The Brutal Telling by Louise Penny. It's such a fantastic book. I cannot wait to read the rest of her Inspector Gamache books! I'll be reviewing this book, hopefully sometime this week. I received The Way Home by George Pelecanos in the mail early this week. It's a win from Thoughts From an Evil Overlord
I'm still reading Bill Bryson's In a Sunburned Country. It's a great book like so many of his and I'm reading it very slowly and really enjoying it. I also read another couple of stories in Come to Me by Amy Bloom. I love her writing and sometimes a short story just fits the bill!

This week after I finish The Way Home, I want to read The Day the Falls Stood Still by Cathy Marie Buchanan, an ARC I received, and Stand the Storm by Breena Clarke, a win from Chocolate & Croissants.

The kitten is wonderful! She is making herself at home and, as we speak, she is stretched out on her side in the middle of our bed sleeping with her head twisted about so that her chin is pointed to the ceiling and her paws are over her little face! It's so cute. I will have pictures in about a week and, hopefully not long after that, a working digital camera. Some of our other cats are having difficulty adjusting to Ruby but, hopefully, they'll come around. Sadie, the former baby, is really ticked off. It's kind of funny to watch her act all mad but I feel for her too. Sam and I are giving her as much extra TLC as she'll let us (and a little more).. I'm hoping she'll accept Ruby soon and maybe become buddies (I hope that's not too much to wish for!)

Thank you for all of your name suggestions and choices. I loved them. I'm still a fan of Betty or Zooey but I think we might be going with Ruby which came up after my last post. Usually Sam or I suddenly hit on the perfect name after spending some time with the kitty, but so far that inspiration hasn't really happened. I like the name Ruby, though, I'm just not sure it fits her.

We are having a very enjoyable, quiet weekend because of our new kitten. We like to stay close to home until we know the new fur baby is acclimated. Sam and I watched the movie I Love You, Man yesterday. It was very good and really funny! Paul Rudd and Jason Segal star. They're great together. I definitely recommend it for an entertaining, comedy that will make you laugh!

I hope you're all having a great Labor Day!
Amy

  1. I haven't been reading too much this summer, I usually get quite few books read while sitting at the pool but this hasn't been the best pool summer. My English Lit. class (Coming of Age in America) started last week, so I am looking forward to reading a few new books. I think the first up is "Bluest Eye" by Tony Morrison. Tonight I read a short story by James Joyce called "Araby" and comment on how the character has come of age through the story.

  2. I actually know 2 whole people who have 6 cats a piece, and each of these people have opted for a mneumonic system. One has candy bars (Snickers, Hershey, Reesie, etc.) and one has named them alphabetically (including Daisy). In certainly helps *me* out in remembering the names of "the children" when I go visiting!

  3. I just finished The Brutal Telling also, the first of the series that I read..and I also loved it!

I also have not written the review yet..lol

  4. Ruby is so cute! I was worried about Maggie May accepting Mazie Grace when she arrived, but they get along now. I let them slowly get used to each other.

I'm reading Dean Koontz's Frankenstein (Books One, Two, and Three). I usually don't like this type of book, but I would give them three out of five stars.

  5. You have another Kathy! Maybe I should be 'KathyA'?
I'm glad Ruby is acclimating. The rest of the pride should accept her soon.
Today I finished The Crowning Glory of Call Lilly Ponder by Laura Wells (YaYa Sisterhood). It was interesting, entertaining, a bit spiritual, a little weird in a couple of places, but well worth the read.

  7. Kathy:
It's a great idea to take an English Lit class. I'm going to look into that. I haven't read Bluest Eye yet. Please let me know what you think of it. The Dubliners are some of my favorite short stories, especially Araby. Joyce's writing is unique and occasionally a little trying but never boring!

    Rhapsody:
That's an organized, smart way to name cats when you have many of them. We aren't that organized, unfortunately! Also, we've found that the cat's personality and behavior kind of "suggests" its name so we try out different names and wait for one to pop. Yep, we know we're a little weird and we're ok with it! LOL

    Caite:
I'm glad you read and loved "The Brutal Telling". I really want to read the book that came before this one because I want to know what happened in the Hadley House!

    Sweet Virginia:
I'm glad Maggie May and Mazie Grace get along well. I know our cats will all settle down and accept Ruby but I also know that they might not all come to like her too much, although it would be great if they did! We'll just have to wait and see what happens.
I have never read anything by Dean Koontz. At some point I'm going to if only just to have the experience at least once! Maybe I'll try the ones you read and liked well enough.

    KathyA:
KathyA is a good idea! Only one of the cats is still ticked off about Ruby's presence. I think I mentioned that Sadie is used to being the spoiled baby! I know she'll come around, it'll just take some time. As for the rest of the pride (love that you called the group of cats this!) no one seems to really like her yet but none of the cats are being mean either which is a good start!
I wondered about that book. I liked the Ya Ya Sisterhood and it's sequel. I'm happy to know you liked The Crowning Glory...

    Michelle:
Thank you! I'm glad you like the name, my husband still isn't sure he does. Everyday he comes up with 2 or 3 other names. Poor kitty...although I don't think she pays much attention to us! lol

Thank you for visiting here! Have a great Labor Day!

  8. I am so pleased to hear that Ruby is settling in. I can just imagine her lying on the bed, all snug.

    Welcome to Sunday salon too.

  10. Welcome to the Sunday Salon, Amy! I've really been wanting to try something by Louise Penny. I hadn't heard of her until this year. It always amazes me how many authors are out there that I am just now learning about. I hope you enjoy Pelecanos book. I read another of his a couple of years ago which I really liked. His books tend to be dark.I look forward to reading what you think of The Day the Falls Stood Still. I am really curious about that one.

I am glad the kitten is doing well and is fitting in. When we brought Anya home last year, Parker was so upset. Like you're doing with your cats, we did our best to give him lots of love so he wouldn't think he was being replaced or forgotten. My dog took to her right away, which kind of surprised me. Anya adores my dog, Riley, just as Parker does. It's funny how some things work out.

    Have a great week!
