Wondrous Words Wednesday!

Wondrous Words Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Bermudaonion's Weblog where we share new (to us) words that we’ve encountered in our reading. Feel free to join in the fun (please do!) Be sure to leave a link to your post over at Bermudaonion's Weblog.

The first two words are from America America by Ethan Canin.

"Perhaps this was a mark of his respect for me; but more likely it was his dismissal of a callow boy who had once belittled him in public."

1. Callow [kal-oh] -adj.
Immature, inexperienced

This next word comes from Off Season by Anne Rivers Siddons

"I know that I read a great deal of folklore and many scurrilous best-sellers, but I don't remember much of the television, except for having a vague crush on Peter Gunn."

2. Scurrilous {skur-uh-luhs} -adj.
1.Grossly or obscenely abusive.
2.Characterized by or using low buffoonery; coarsely jocular or derisive.

This word is from Confections of a Closet Master Baker by Gesine Bullock-Prado

"I was both grotesquely undisciplined and a potential fatty, effortlessly breaching two cardinal sins in my mother's endless ledger of unforgivable venialities."

3. Venial {vee-nee-uhl} -adj.
1.Able to be forgiven or pardoned; not seriously wrong, as a sin (as opposed to mortal).
2.Excusable; minor; trifling
